Your Tromsø Guide

Tromsø City Walking Tour

Stroll through the historic center of Tromsø and experience life at 69° North!

This is a small group tour to discover the history and culture of Tromsø.

The visit will begin with a one-hour walk from Tromsø Cathedral (which is not the Arctic Cathedral… I know, it’s confusing) to the old town.

Here, a visit to the Polar Museum (which is not Polaria… I know, that’s confusing too) is a must: Arctic hunting and polar exploration were the very activities that made Tromsø the most important city in Northern Scandinavia, the “Gateway to the Arctic.” The museum visit will last one hour.

Finally, we’ll return to Tromsø Cathedral by following a different route, to give you an even more complete view of the city.

This tour is not a boring list of dates and historical facts that will be forgotten ten minutes after the tour ends — everything I’ll explain will instead be presented as part of a bigger story that will guide us from the beginning to the end of the visit. My goal is to offer you a narrative that’s easy and enjoyable to follow.

Also, during this tour I won’t just talk about the city’s history and culture — I’ll also share anecdotes and curiosities about life at 69° North, where the sun doesn’t rise for six months of the year (although, in reality, it’s ‘only’ two).

I’ll be proud to introduce you to my city, but what I enjoy even more is your curiosity: I’ll gladly answer all your questions, on any topic that sparks your interest. Maybe you want to know more about the Sami people, or the Vikings? About life during the midnight sun and the polar night? Or maybe you’re curious about how I managed to learn Norwegian (this “impossible” language)? Is it true that more babies are born nine months after the polar night? And what about King Rama VIII of Thailand — did he really die in an accident in 1946, or is there a conspiracy behind it?

By the end of our visit, you’ll have a much broader understanding of why so many people live so far away and isolated in the Arctic — and above all, what it really means to live in the Arctic!
